Botox is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatment in the US, and it has been so for many years. Most people don’t really consider getting this treatment until they are bothered by significant wrinkles. However, some younger people start receiving Botox treatments before they ever notice any visible signs of aging. Why might this be effective? How can you decide whether this is right for you?
Botox can prevent wrinkles
To understand why Botox could work as a wrinkle prevention method, it’s helpful to consider how it works. Botox is injected under the skin to relax particular facial muscles. When these muscles are overly active, they cause folds in the skin that become deep grooves and wrinkles over time. By keeping the muscles relaxed, Botox allows the skin to stay smoother.
Some people choose to begin receiving Botox in their late 20s or early 30s, while the skin is still smooth and unlined. This is called preventative rejuvenation, or prejuvenation. In other words, when used in this way, Botox keeps you looking young.
When injected into a younger face, Botox prevents wrinkles from forming. Relaxing the facial muscles that cause many wrinkles allows the skin to retain its youthful, smooth contour. Instead of being repeatedly folded and slowly developing wrinkles, the skin stays smooth. This doesn’t mean that no wrinkles will ever form. However, the deeper grooves caused by the action of muscles will be largely prevented by Botox.
For those who already have wrinkles, Botox can still be helpful. By reducing the activity of the muscles that cause the wrinkles, the treatment will allow these wrinkles to gradually soften over time, and they will slowly fade away. Dermal fillers can also be helpful in this situation, to fill in the grooves that have already been created. It’s entirely possible to receive both Botox and fillers in a single treatment session, and many patients choose to do so.
Schedule your consultation
If you’re in your late 20s or early 30s, and you want to maintain your youthful looks for as long as possible, then you might want to consider starting treatment with Botox sooner rather than later. This can help to prevent wrinkles before they ever get started. It’s very important to have the injections performed by an expert. Using too much Botox, or injecting it into the wrong muscles, could cause an unnatural “frozen” look and might not have the desired effect in the long run.
If you’d like to discuss the pros and cons of this option, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Caniglia. He will be happy to discuss the best ways to maintain your youthful facial appearance.
