Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling is a procedure in which tiny needles are used to make small punctures in the surface of the skin. The purpose is to stimulate the growth of collagen in the skin. This helps to tighten the skin and shrink pores and scars.

Although there are microneedling devices available for home use (these are often known as dermarollers), they’re not the same as the ones used by an expert in the field of aesthetics. The home devices don’t penetrate the skin as deeply, and so they can’t stimulate the skin’s healing response and collagen growth as effectively. Using the home dermaroller certainly won’t hurt, and may benefit your skin. However, if you want the more impressive results that microneedling can provide, then you should come in for a professional microneedling procedure.

When you come for your microneedling, there is the option to have numbing cream applied to your face to reduce the discomfort of the procedure. This will need to stay on for about half an hour and then be wiped off just before the procedure. (Not everyone finds the numbing cream to be necessary, as the discomfort from microneedling is not too intense.) Next, your aesthetician will use the microneedling device across your entire face. Once this is complete, soothing moisturizer will be applied. The entire process takes only about an hour, making this a very convenient treatment.

Microneedling Benefits

Some of the benefits of microneedling include:

  • Improves fine lines and wrinkles
  • Helps to shrink large pores
  • Reduces small scars (such as acne scars)
  • Reduces superficial dark spots (“sun spots”)
  • Improves skin elasticity
  • Gives skin a healthy and youthful “glow”
  • Minimally invasive procedure with little to no downtime
  • Improves confidence in your appearance

Most people notice an improvement after their first treatment. Some benefits are often apparent by the next day, although continued improvement over the next weeks is common. For the best results, a series of treatments is recommended. This is because the skin will synthesize new collagen with each treatment, so you’ll see your skin continuing to improve. We often recommend a series of 3-5 treatments spaced a month apart, although this can vary depending on the skin issues you’re dealing with; we will give you a personalized recommendation after meeting you and learning more about your situation and your goals.

Microneedling Recovery

This is a relatively gentle treatment, and the recovery is not difficult. Immediately after the treatment, you may notice that your skin is a little red and irritated. For many people, this is gone within a few hours, and it nearly always resolves within a few days following your microneedling procedure.

Because microneedling creates channels down into the deeper layers of your skin, any products that you put on your face after microneedling will penetrate more deeply. In some cases, this can help the products to work more effectively. However, with certain products, this may cause skin irritation. At your procedure, ask which products are appropriate to use on your skin following microneedling.

Microneedling Risks

In general, microneedling is very safe, because it’s minimally invasive. There are small risks of bruising, bleeding, or infection, but these are very uncommon. When the procedure is done with good technique by a professional, the risks are extremely small.

However, there are certain groups who are at a higher risk of having an unpleasant outcome. These include people with inflammatory skin diseases (such as eczema or psoriasis) and those who have recently had radiation therapy or other serious skin injury, because the injury caused by the microneedles may be too much for their skin. Pregnant women may experience changes in skin color after the procedure, so it’s not a good choice for them. Also, anyone with a history of forming keloids (large, raised scars) could be at risk for a keloid after microneedling. These groups may want to consider a different skin treatment.
