Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion Scottsdale

Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular treatments we offer. It requires no downtime and causes little discomfort, and produces an instant softening and smoothing of the skin along with help for a variety of concerns with the superficial layer of the skin. Microdermabrasion Procedure

Microdermabrasion uses tiny micro-crystals to polish and resurface the skin. A small, handheld tool pushes these micro-crystals out and vacuums them back up at the same time, allowing them to rub across your skin for a thorough exfoliation.

A microdermabrasion treatment takes only about 30 minutes, making it very convenient for those with busy lives. Your technician will thoroughly cleanse your skin, so the micro-crystals can reach your skin’s surface effectively. Next, they’ll use the wand on your face, followed by another cleansing procedure to clean up any stray micro-crystal that may have escaped the tool’s vacuum. Finally, a moisturizer will be applied, and you’re on your way.

During your treatment, you may feel a sensation on your skin. Some people describe it as tugging on the skin, warmth on the skin, or even like being licked by a cat. Although this sensation may feel a little strange, receiving the treatment shouldn’t be painful.

In general, microdermabrasion works best if you have a series of treatments. Although one treatment will provide a benefit and will leave your skin feeling very soft and smooth, you’ll get a greater benefit from having multiple treatments. Often, people schedule a series of 5-10 treatments, one to two weeks apart. The ideal schedule depends on what skin problems you’re trying to treat; ask your technician for recommendations for your specific situation.

Microdermabrasion Benefits

People may notice a number of different benefits from microdermabrasion, including:

  • Helps with acne and removes excess oils
  • Reduces the appearance of small scars (such as acne scars), fine lines, and large pores
  • Improves uneven skin tone and sun spots
  • Makes skin instantly softer and smoother
  • Non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime

Microdermabrasion Recovery

This is a relatively gentle treatment, and the recovery is not difficult. Immediately after your treatment, your skin may be somewhat red and a little irritated, as though you had a mild sunburn. You might continue to notice that your skin is a little irritated or “tight” feeling for a day or so afterwards.

Microdermabrasion Risks

Because it works on the most superficial layer of the skin, there are generally very few risks to microdermabrasion. However, if your skin is already fragile or irritated, then microdermabrasion might be too much for your skin to handle. For example, people who have inflammatory skin conditions (such as rosacea, or certain types of acne) or who are taking certain types of medications (especially isotretinoin, or Accutane) are not good candidates for microdermabrasion. Their skin is more fragile, and the procedure could cause severe skin irritation or even bleeding.

Talk with your provider about your medical history to find out whether you’re a good candidate for microdermabrasion, or whether you should consider an alternative skin treatment instead.
