Sun Spots

Sun Spot Treatment Scottsdale

Sun spots, also known as age spots or liver spots, are dark spots that form in response to sun exposure. Medically known as solar lentigines, these superficial dark spots can have an impact on a person’s apparent age.

Although makeup is sometimes effective in covering them up, many people would like to get rid of sun spots more permanently. There are several different options for treatment, which can also be combined to achieve the desired result.

Skin Care Products

Topical products may help with sun spots. Products containing ingredients like hydroquinone and retinoids may lead to fading of the spots over several months. In addition, using a daily sunscreen will help to prevent the sun spots from getting worse or new ones forming.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion uses a small handheld device to pass small crystals quickly over the skin. This removes the skin’s most superficial layer, revealing healthier skin underneath and stimulating a healing response to rejuvenate the skin. Multiple treatments may be needed to get the desired results.

Intense Pulsed Light

This treatment uses a series of micropulses of bright light at a particular wavelength. This light is absorbed by the sun spots, temporarily heating them and damaging them. The body’s natural healing responses then remove the spots. Again, a series of treatments are often necessary.

Laser Treatment

Similarly to IPL, laser treatments work to resurface the skin, creating a healing response that gradually removes sun spots. The fractional laser is usually used. There may be a little bit more redness and swelling with the laser than with IPL, though it’s usually minimal with both procedures. Lasers can sometimes cause hyperpigmentation in people with darker skin tones, so it’s important to carefully consider the treatment options.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel can address a variety of superficial skin issues, including sun spots. Rather than laser energy, this treatment uses acids to cause the superficial layer of skin to slough off, revealing healthier skin underneath. Also like laser, a chemical peel that’s too aggressive may lead to hyperpigmentation in certain people.
