Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL Scottsdale

Intense Pulsed Light, also known as PhotofacialSM, is a photo rejuvenation treatment which treats skin damage. This gentle, non-invasive treatment is non-ablative, meaning that it does not disrupt the skin’s surface (making it different from laser treatments, which also use light but at a higher intensity). This means it involves no downtime, minimal discomfort, and minimal risk. PhotofacialSM improves the texture and color of the skin to restore a smoother, more youthful appearance.

How does IPL work?

The device emits a broad spectrum of bright light, which is then filtered to produce very specific wavelengths. Because different wavelengths of light are absorbed by different tissues in the skin, adjusting the wavelength allows particular tissues to be targeted. If there are pigmentation problems on the skin, then the light is targeted to the pigment; if there is redness or broken blood vessels, then wavelengths will be chosen that target those. If the goal is to tighten and tone the skin overall, then the wavelengths will be chosen to stimulate collagen production in the skin.

Light is emitted in micropulses, which are very bright but last for only a fraction of a second. The light is absorbed by the targeted tissue, which causes it to be heated briefly. This causes damage to the unwanted tissue. The body’s natural repair processes will then remove the damaged parts, leaving behind smoother and more even skin.

What types of conditions can be treated?

Some of the conditions that can be treated with IPL include:

  • Redness
  • Rosacea
  • Broken veins
  • Brown spots (hyperpigmentation)
  • Enlarged pores

What is the recovery like?

There is virtually no downtime with IPL treatments. Because the treatment is targeted to the specific tissue that you wish to remove, there is little damage to surrounding areas. There may be some redness and light swelling of the skin, which will resolve fairly quickly (often within hours, but it can be a few days in some cases). Any brown spots that were treated may crust over, and the healing process will gradually begin to remove them.

In many cases, multiple treatments are necessary to achieve the desired effect. 3-5 treatments are often recommended. We will make specific recommendations for your individual situation after meeting with you.
