Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation Scottsdale

Hyperpigmentation, or excessive pigmentation of the skin, is a common skin concern. Some people notice small dark spots on the skin, such as sun spots (medically known as solar lentigines). For others, there are patches of darker skin or overall uneven pigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is one of the factors that can make you look older.

For those who are bothered by hyperpigmentation, we have several different treatments available that may be able to help you to regain your

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

An intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment stimulates the growth of collagen, to help the skin heal itself. Sun spots respond particularly well to this treatment, although overall hyperpigmentation can also be treated using IPL.

Chemical Peels

A peel uses acids to remove the skin’s surface layer, revealing the healthier skin underneath. We use various types of peels for our patients with hyperpigmentation.

For patients with certain skin types, chemical peels can sometimes lead to hyperpigmentation as a result of the inflammation that the peel induces in the skin. Patients with darker skin tend to be more prone to this side effect. Other treatments, such as IPL, may be preferable for these patients for this reason.

Laser

A laser treatment causes exfoliation of the skin’s outer layer. There are some lasers that treat the entire surface of the skin, with a more intense recovery but more dramatic results. Others, such as a fractionated CO2 laser, treat only a portion of the skin’s surface, so they’re more gentle but the results are not as dramatic.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure in which the skin is resurfaced using tiny crystals. A special handheld tool is used to blow the crystals across the skin and simultaneously vacuum them back up. By removing the skin’s outer layer, the more radiant skin underneath is revealed. This treatment can be effective for hyperpigmentation.

Products

There are several different topical products that can help to lessen hyperpigmentation and restore a more even skin tone. For example, vitamin C, hydroquinone, and retinoids are all ingredients that can help with this problem. We carry a variety of skin care products with research-based active ingredients that can help with hyperpigmentation.
