Many people are aware of the need to take great care of their faces. They may use daily sunscreen and have a solid skin care routine that they perform every day. Some people also choose to take advantage of what cosmetic medicine has to offer for facial rejuvenation, such as dermal fillers and botox.

It’s very satisfying to look in the mirror and see the results of your dedication showing on your face. However, most people don’t take equal care with their hands. They may find that even as their face remains relatively youthful, their hands give away their age.

How does aging affect the hands? Can we do anything about it?

Aging of the hands

The hands age much like the rest of the body does. There’s a slow breakdown of collagen in the skin, leading to wrinkled and sagging skin. Dark spots (known as age spots) may form. The skin of the hands is usually exposed to the sun just as often as the face is, and without protection, this sun exposure gradually takes its toll.

There is also a loss of volume in the back of the hands. The tendons and veins become more visible as tissue is lost in between them, giving the hands a hollow and aged look.

Addressing aging of the hands

Fortunately, we don’t have to ignore the aging of the hands. The same techniques that we use for the aging of the face and neck can also be applied to the backs of the hands, in order to rejuvenate them.

There are various treatments available that can address wrinkled, sagging or unevenly pigmented skin. Some of the options include chemical peels, light therapy, microneedling, or microdermabrasion. These treatments help to tone and tighten the skin and lead to a more even skin tone and texture. Although they’re very popular for the face, they can be used on the hands as well. Some of our clients choose to have both the face and the hands treated at the same time, for an overall rejuvenated look.

For addressing the loss of volume, dermal fillers can be used. The filler is injected into the backs of the hands, primarily in the areas between the tendons. This helps to disguise structures like tendons and veins that have become too prominent and restore more youthful fullness to the appearance of the hands. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most common; they are actually FDA-approved for this specific purpose, and studies have shown good results from using HA fillers in the backs of the hands.
