Upper vs. Lower Eyelid Surgery

26th Dec, 2012

Signs of aging often appear in the eyelids before other areas of the face. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a procedure that rejuvenates and drastically improves the appearance of the eyes and areas surrounding the eyes. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or on both the upper and lower eyelids. You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you are experiencing any of these conditions:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
  • Loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • A puffy appearance of the upper eyelids
  • Droopiness in the lower eyelids

Not only are these conditions aesthetically unpleasing, but droopiness, loose hanging skin, and excess skin can impair vision. For men and women alike, eyelid surgery may be the ideal solution to these unpleasant conditions. Our Scottsdale plastic surgery team can assist you in determining whether upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both upper and lower eyelid surgery is right for you. Long lasting, the results of eyelid surgery make you appear naturally refreshed and well rested.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is a simple and quick procedure. The majority of our Scottsdale eyelid surgery patients experience little to no side effects. A small amount of bruising, although less common with the lower eyelids than the upper eyelids, is the most commonly experienced side effect. There is minimal discomfort the next day, and most patients are able to return to work within seven days of the procedure. Strenuous activity may be resumed two weeks after the procedure. Dr. Caniglia tailors a treatment plan to your specific needs and goals, in order to determine the procedure best suited to enhance the contours of your eyes.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

The results of upper eyelid surgery can last anywhere from five years to a lifetime. For patients desiring eyelids free of droopy, loose skin, upper eyelid surgery may be the right treatment. The surgery is usually completed within forty minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. During the surgery, an incision is made in the natural fold of the upper eyelid, and extends slightly beyond the outside corner of the eye. Excess skin and fatty tissue are then removed. The sutures are hidden in the natural fold of the eyelid, and remain in place for several days after the procedure.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The results of lower eyelid surgery can last a lifetime. During lower eyelid surgery, an incision is usually hidden in the lower eyelashes. Through this incision, fat, excess skin, and muscle are removed. Fat may also be redistributed to eliminate puffiness or bulges under the eyes. Placement of the incision in the natural crease lines allows for the scar to heal in an inconspicuous way.
