How do chemical peels work?

One of the most versatile treatments that we offer is a chemical peel. We have a range of options, from mild alpha-hydroxy peels to deeper TCA peels. How does a chemical peel work? What types of skin issues might a chemical peel address?
Chemical peels cause exfoliation
There’s normally a layer of dead cells on the outer surface of the skin. During a chemical peel, an acidic solution is applied to the face, which temporarily changes the pH level of the skin. The acid is left in place for a set period of time and is then removed to prevent damage to the skin.
The acid in a chemical peel dissolves the connections between the living and the dead skin cells. As it’s no longer connected, the layer of dead skin cells will slough off. This reveals the newer skin underneath, which looks smoother, brighter, and more radiant.
This process of exfoliation also stimulates the body’s natural healing response. The skin will produce proteins like collagen as it rebuilds the tissues of the skin. This increased production of collagen leads to tightening of the skin.
Getting rid of the outer layer of dead skin cells can also help to unclog the pores. This can be very helpful for people with acne.
What types of skin issues can be treated by a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are very versatile, and can be useful in a number of different situations. Some of the common skin issues that can be treated by chemical peels include:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun spots
- Acne
- Acne scars or other small scars
- Uneven skin tone
- Changes in skin texture, such as rough or scaly skin
- Melasma (darkening of the skin, usually caused by hormonal changes)
- Dull complexion
While a single chemical peel will certainly have an effect, the best results come from having a series of treatments. This usually involves a few peels, spaced four to six weeks apart. Some people continue to have maintenance treatments every few months.
