Provider: Ronald J. Caniglia, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Scar Revision is a procedure designed to improve or optimize the appearance of a scar. The best candidates are those who have realistic expectations. It's important to note that most scars cannot be completely removed and that the goal of surgery is to minimize or improve the scar's appearance.
Dr. Caniglia performs most scar revision surgeries on an outpatient basis at the Plastic Surgery Center at Kierland (PSCK). The PSCK is an outpatient surgery center located within the Caniglia Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. The surgery center is AAAHC - accredited and both state - and Medicare-licensed.
Surgical times will vary according to the size and location of the scar. Small scar revisions can often be performed with just local anesthesia. For larger scar revisions, or if the patient desires, local anesthesia can be combined with intravenous sedation (twilight sleep). Dr. Caniglia will make every attempt to orient the new scar in what is called the relaxed skin tension lines (RSTLs) of the face or the naturally occurring lines of the face. There are a variety of different scar revision techniques available, and the appropriate technique will depend on the type and location of the scar. Some of the more common techniques include simple excision, Z-plasty, W-plasty, and geometric line closure.
The recovery after a scar revision procedure will depend on the location and extent of the scar revision. Patients undergoing minor revisions are often able to return to work the very next day, while larger revisions may require seven or more days of recovery. Any non-dissolvable sutures that are used are removed in seven days. The scar will ultimately take up to a year to mature and blend in with the surrounding tissues.
