Dysport (abobtulinumtoxin A)

Ronald J. Caniglia, M.D.,F.A.C.S.

Dysport, known technically as abobotulinumtoxin A, is now approved for use in the United States. Used in patient care in the U.K. since 1991 and in 27 countries for aesthetic use, Dysport is now available for the treatment of facial wrinkles. By relaxing the underlying muscles responsible for certain facial wrinkles, it helps to soften the wrinkle and create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Dysport is very helpful for individuals with horizontal wrinkles of the forehead, vertical frown lines between the brows and wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet). Dimpling of the chin and lines around the mouth can also be treated.

The Dysport procedure takes place in the doctor's office exam room and takes just five minutes to complete. There is no anesthesia needed as patients will feel little discomfort. Dr. Caniglia uses a very fine needle to precisely place the Dysport in the appropriate muscles. Dysport usually involves no downtime and patients can return to normal activities the next day. Results last an average of three to four months and the procedure can be repeated as often as necessary.

What is Dysport™?
Dysport™ is a prescription medicine comprised of a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. It can be injected into specific muscles to improve the look of moderate to severe expression lines, such as frown lines (glabellar lines) located between the eyebrows. It can also be used to improve abnormal head position and neck pain in patients with cervical dystonia (CD). Dysport™ is administered via injection during a simple, non-surgical treatment performed in the office setting.

How does Dysport™ work?
Dysport™ is injected into specific muscles responsible for facial expression and the resultant lines. Once injected, Dysport™ blocks the signals from the nerve to the muscles, thereby reducing muscle activity and improving the wrinkle or line.

Where is the Dysport™ treatment performed?
Dr. Caniglia performs the Dysport™ procedure in his exam room at the Plastic Surgery Center at Kierland located within the Caniglia Center in Scottsdale, Arizona.

How long does the Dysport™ treatment take to perform?
Dysport™ treatment is very quick and takes just five minutes or so to perform.

How painful is Dysport™ treatment?
Dysport™ treatments involve little pain, though patients may experience some minor, brief discomfort. A cold pack or anesthetic cream may be used if necessary to numb the treatment area prior to injection.

What is the recovery like after a Dysport™ treatment?
Dysport™ involves little recovery or downtime and most patients can return to their usual routine the very next day. Any side effects that do result are typically short lived.

How soon after my Dysport™ treatment will I see results?
Patients may begin to see improvement within days of their Dysport™ treatment, with full improvement after one week. Dysport™ tends to involve an earlier onset of action compared to Botox®.

How long do the results of  Dysport™ last?
While results will vary, Dysport™ generally provides improvement for up to four months.

How long has Dysport™ been in use?
Dysport™ was approved for use in the U.S. in April of 2009 but has been used in other countries since 1991.
