BOTOX® Cosmetic

Ronald J. Caniglia, M.D.,F.A.C.S.

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are a safe, well-proven method of temporarily softening lines and wrinkles of the face. Botox® is most commonly used in those patients with horizontal wrinkles of the forehead, vertical frown lines between the eyebrows and wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet). It can also be used to treat dimpling of the chin and lines around the mouth.

The Botox® procedure is performed in the exam room and takes just five minutes to complete. No anesthesia is required. A very fine needle is used to inject the Botox® into a small area of the muscle beneath the line or wrinkle. This reduces the contractions of the underlying muscle responsible for the wrinkle, thus reducing or eliminating the wrinkle and providing a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

There is little discomfort or pain associated with the procedure and most patients return to normal activities the very next day. The results of BOTOX® Cosmetic injections typically last for three to four months and the procedure can be repeated as often as necessary.

What is Botox®?
Botox® Cosmetic is a purified botulinum toxin type A which can be injected into specific facial muscles during a simple, non-surgical treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of expression lines. Botox® is commonly used to treat moderate to severe frown lines (glabellar lines), which are the vertical lines located between the eyebrows.

How does Botox® work?
Botox® effectively treats lines induced by facial expression by blocking the nerve impulses to the responsible muscles, thereby reducing the muscle activity.

Where is the Botox® treatment performed?
Dr. Caniglia performs the Botox® injection in his exam room at the Plastic Surgery Center at Kierland, which is located within the Caniglia Center in Scottsdale, Arizona.

How long does the Botox® treatment take to perform?
Treatment with Botox® is very quick, taking just five minutes or so to complete.

How painful is Botox® treatment?
Any discomfort associated with Botox® treatment is typically minor and brief. If necessary, the treatment area can be numbed prior to the injection with an anesthetic cream or cold pack.

What is the recovery like after a Botox® treatment?
There is little recovery or downtime associated with Botox® treatment. Side effects are few and short lived and patients are able to return to normal activities the next day.

How soon after my Botox® treatment will I see results?
While individual results will vary, many patients begin to see improvement in their frown lines within days of treatment, with continued improvement for up to thirty days afterward.

How long do the results of  Botox® last?
Results will vary, but the improvement provided by Botox® treatment generally lasts up to four months.
